36-year-old Singaporean sentenced for evasion of duty tax, GST
SINGAPORE: A 36-year-old Singaporean Toh Chee Wee has to pay a
fine of S$1.42 million or serve a default jail sentence of 100 weeks
for evading duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) on car imports
amounting to some S$145,000.
On top of that, Toh is required to pay for earlier shortfalls of S$181,000 in duty and S$59,500 in GST.
Toh had pleaded guilty to 58 of the charges against him. Another 112 charges were taken into consideration.
Customs officers found that Toh had under-declared the values of
234 cars which were declared in 85 duty and GST payments during a
five-month period between April and August 2007.
Toh, the owner of Yi Sheng Trading, had paid a lower duty amount of
S$807,700 and a lower GST amount of S$263,400. He was supposed to have
paid S$989,500 for duty tax and S$323,000 in GST.
He was arrested on 7 January 2009 and charged in court for his offences.
Since November 2008, Singapore Customs has charged 12 persons in
court for the offence of evasion of duty and GST. The cases are
ongoing.
