SINGAPORE: The Court of Appeal has dismissed the prosecution's appeal for Aniza Essa to be jailed for life.
Aniza, who instigated her teen lover to kill her husband, will serve her sentence of nine years in jail.
Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong explained that there was no indication Aniza would re-offend.
He also noted that psychiatric reports found Aniza had moderate
depressive episodes which substantially impaired her mental
responsibility for the offence.
Attorney-General Walter Woon had argued for Aniza to be put behind bars
for life and that he took an interest in this case because many points
of law had to be clarified.
Aniza, a mother of two, now faces the task of explaining her actions to her children.
Aniza's lawyer, Noor Mohamed Maricon, said: "The children,
especially the elder one, felt that he needed an explanation as to why
mama killed papa. She has authorised me or asked me for help to answer
that question for her to the children."
