Singapore has been named the Best Seaport in Asia for the 21st time at the 23rd Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards held in Hong Kong.
The Republic edged out competitors such as the ports of Hong Kong and Klang, Malaysia, which were also nominated in the category.
The prestigious award was received by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
In a statement, MPA said Singapore excelled because its port is cost-competitive and container shipping-friendly.
It added that the maritime authorities also provides timely and adequate investment in port infrastructure to meet future demand.
In 2008, Singapore’s maritime and port sector hit new highs in vessel arrival tonnage, container throughput, and bunkering volumes.
Vessel arrivals reached 1.6 billion gross tons, an increase of about 11 per cent over 2007.
Container traffic grew by about 7 per cent, and the total volume of bunkers sold set a new record at 34.9 million tonnes.
