Mandatory Give Way to Buses Scheme to be rolled out islandwide
The white triangular markings reminding motorists to give way to buses exiting bus bays will be painted on roads at 180 additional locations from June.
This follows the successful pilot of the Mandatory Give Way to Buses Scheme at three locations.
The Land Transport Authority says the three-month trial which ended in March, showed that buses were able to exit the bus bays much faster than before with the new markings.
For instance, along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, the time required for a bus to leave a bus bay has dropped by 40 per cent.
At the same time, more than 1,500 advisories were handed out to drivers who did not give way to buses during the trial.
No fines were imposed, says LTA's Group Director of Road Operations and Community Partnership Chin Kian Keong.
"By and large most drivers tend to comply to this and give way to buses coming out from the bus stops. Where there are drivers who did not give way , we send them advisories and I think no one repeated the offence so I think by and large drivers have accepted it and based on our monitoring, we have noticed that it has not affected their travel speeds at all."
But motorists who do not give way to buses under the scheme could be fined $130.
LTA says it plans to roll out the scheme to most bus bays islandwide over the next two years.
