NParks, PUB remind public not to release animals into the wild
As Vesak Day approaches, the National Parks Board and national water agency, PUB, have issued a reminder for the public not to release animals into nature reserves and reservoirs.
Such acts they said may have adverse effects on the ecological balance in the nature reserves and parks, as well as the water quality of in the reservoirs.
Assistant Director at NParks, Sharon Chan, said most people don’t realise that releasing animals means sending them to their deaths.
They may not be equipped to survive in the wild.
Ms Chan said should these animals harbour viruses, they will contaminate the water and affect other native wildlife.
Being kind to animals is one of the core practices of Buddhism.
However, President of the Buddhist Fellowship, Angie Monksfield, said freeing animals into the wild, especially those that have been bred in captivity, isn’t necessarily a kind act.
To remind the public not to release animals, members of Buddhist Fellowship, students and volunteers will be distributing brochures and putting up posters at various locations, including MacRitchie Reservoir Park, Lower and Upper Peirce Reservoir over the next two weekends.
