According to the Traffic Police almost 70 per cent of pedestrians who lost their lives on the roads last year, were jaywalkers.
They say pedestrians should use the designated pedestrian crossings and should never attempt to cross the expressways.
Motorists should also be alert and anticipate sudden occurrences and look out for vulnerable parties like pedestrians.
Pedestrians who jaywalk can face a fine of up to $1,000, or up to three months of jail time.
The penalties are doubled in the case of a subsequent or second offence.
Last year the Traffic Police issued about 7,000 summons to jaywalkers, and about 1,500 summons have already been issued in the first quarter of this year.
