Singapore has topped the International Design Ranks.
The International Design Scoreboard places Singapore tops in relative terms for its high investment in design and a clear national policy for design.
The scorecard measures countries' design capability based on a number of factors, including government investment in design, total number of design graduates, and number of design intellectual property registrations.
In the inaugural study, Singapore was tops in the measures of government investment in design over the past five to 10 years, and turnover in the design services sector.
The favourable ranking was also attributed to Singapore’s ambitions to move the economy from being primarily a manufacturing centre to a design centre, which enhances its competitiveness in the increasingly ideas-driven economy.
The study also highlights that Singapore has a large design services sector based on the number of designers employed, number of firms and turnover.
Twelve other countries including Japan, South Korea, Sweden, the United States and Britain were also included in the study by a consortium of British universities and supported by the United Kingdom Design Council.
