Man arrested for taking rap for another's crime
Being a fall guy doesn't pay.
This was the lesson learnt by a Tan Poh Heng, a sales promoter, who was charged in court this morning for accepting a bribe.
He had tried to take the rap for someone else's speeding offence in exchange for $1,200.
Huang Yongjie had been caught by the speed camera along Upper Thomson Road in December 2007.
A statement from the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said that when Huang received notice of the offence from the Traffic Police, he approached his colleague, Yap Xiao Ping, to recommend someone who was willing to take the rap on his behalf, and said he was willing to pay.
Yap then recommended her boyfriend, Tan, who allegedly received a cash cheque from Mr Huang.
Tan then submitted his own details as the guilty driver and paid the $150 fine.
The case was adjourned for a pre-trial conference next month
If found guilty, Tan could be fined up to $100,000 and imprisoned for up to 5 years under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
