Renowned composer and recipient of the prestigious Public Service Star Award in 1970, Ahmad Ja'afar has died.
He was 89.
Mr Ahmad's son, Muliadi, said his father was admitted to Alexandra Hospital about two months ago for aneurysm - a bulge in an artery caused by weakened artery walls.
Doctors performed a surgery on Mr Ahmad but complications set in and he contracted pneumonia.
Mr Muliadi said his father died of the infection at around 1pm today.
Mr Ahmad was a well-respected musician who received a Cultural Medallion, Singapore's highest accolade for the arts, in 1981.
He composed many popular Malay songs and was also a retired leading conductor of the then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra.
Mr Ahmad is survived by two daughters and a son.
