The portable Automated Gun-Barrel Cleaning Kit, developed by a Work Improvement Team from the 6th Army Maintenance Base, makes cleaning big, heavy artillery gun barrels a breeze, simply by using a winch.
Previously four men had to manually pull a heavy and slippery five-piece rod through the barrel of a 155 millimetre artillery gun to clean it.
The Morwits project team was one of three which received a new Mindef Innovation Award to recognise units and teams that exemplify a strong culture of innovation and creativity.
Speaking at the Ministry of Defence Pride Day today, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said finding simple solutions that can make a difference also helps to get better value for Singapore's defence dollar.
The Pride Movement, which is Mindef's cost efficiency and economy drive efforts has achieved savings of almost 140 million dollars in the last financial year.
Unit participation in the Mindef Innovation Programme has also increased from 35 in 2005 to 271 in 2008.
