Singapore consumers have not curbed their online spending habits despite the challenging economic conditions.
This, going by a survey done by card issuer, Visa.
It showed that e-shoppers from Singapore spent an average US$4,000 in the 12 months ended December 2008.
In fact, they were the top spenders online, followed by consumers in Hong Kong and India.
Online spending in these countries and territories also saw the largest quarter-on-quarter increases, Visa said.
Those from Hong Kong said they spent more than double what they had spent in the previous survey period.
Spending in Singapore rose by a third compared to the previous survey.
Visa’s country manager for Singapore and Brunei, Meranda Chan, said the survey showed that online shopping appears to be resilient in the uncertain economy.
She said the ability to browse a wide range of retail offerings to compare prices and seek cheaper buys on the Internet seems to be leading budget conscious consumers to shop online.
The top three biggest online spend areas were all travel related.
