Singapore’s retail sales fell for a seventh straight month in April as consumers spent less on big ticket items amid the deepening economic recession.
Data released by the Department of Statistics showed Singapore's retail sales index dropped 11.7 percent in April from a year ago.
Compared to March, sales were 3.1 percent lower after adjusting for seasonal factors.
Sales of big ticket items such as cars as well as furniture and household equipment suffered double digit declines compared to the year-ago period.
Petrol service stations reported a 21 percent drop in turnover mainly due to lower petrol prices.
The Statistics department says apparel, footwear, jewellry as well as telecom and computer products also recorded lower receipts in April.
But medical goods as well as supermarkets and department stores reported higher sales over the period.
