HSA cautions public against two illegal health products
The Health Sciences Authority is warning the public against taking two health products that have been found to contain potent western medicinal substances.
The first product is a Malay Jamu medicine labelled ' Delima Raja Urat '.
The second product is a Chinese medicine labelled ' Cao Gen Bai Lin Wan ' .
Two separate reports of serious adverse drug reactions were received from two GPs on these products.
Both products were bought overseas by the patients and have not been found to be sold locally at retail shops.
The first product, 'Delima Raja Urat' , is packaged in small plastic containers and claims to treat back pain, muscle pain, numbness and gout.
It has since been tested to contain four potent undeclared western medical substances.
A woman who took the substance for more than a month for pain relief, suffered symptoms of high blood sugar which later developed into diabetes.
The second product is presented as a Chinese Traditional Medicine and packaged in blister-foil and paper box.
It claims to help in relaxing muscles, improve blood circulation and relieve pain .
An elderly man who took the product for two months developed symptoms such as increased blood pressure, rapid weight gain and facial flushing and thinning of skin .
These symptoms seen in these two patients are consistent with the adverse effects from the use of a potent steroid used to treat inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and asthma.
The adverse effect from the prolonged usage of such substance will lead to muscle and bone damage, increased blood, sugar pressure and cholesterol, as well as mental and mood disorders.
HSA strongly advises anyone who has purchased these products to not consume them.
