Full time NSman dies after being pinned by Land Rover during inspection
SINGAPORE: Full-time National Serviceman Second Lieutenant (2LT)
Nicholas Chan Wei Kit died in hospital on Friday after a Land Rover he
was inspecting rolled backwards and hit him, pinning him under the
vehicle.
A statement from the Ministry of Defence says 2LT Chan, a Motor
Transport Officer, was taking delivery of the SAF Land Rover in Seletar
Camp at about 11.30am when the incident happened.
A recovery vehicle was activated half an hour later and managed to lift the Land Rover.
A medical team from the Seletar Medical Centre attempted to
resuscitate 2LT Chan immediately. He was sent to Changi General
Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1.07pm.
Mindef and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late 2LT Chan.
Mindef says it will assist the family in their time of grief. It is also investigating the incident.

No wheel choke is a major fault. The officer didn't follow safety protocol... Wonder how he fell n can get pin under the vehicle since there is ample space to lie under the vehicle when we do vehicle repairs/inspections without a jack even.
Anyway its the 1st time i see an officer doing the inspection since its normally done by specs/drivers and i don't see the officers at all.
Why need a recovery vehicle to lift the vehicle? Seletar camp should have its own workshop and all workshops should have vehicle jacks etc which can lift the vehicles esp when a LR isn't that heavy. Even a 5 ton can be lift by jack so why waste time activating and waiting for recovery vehicle?
with 3 safety checks of 2 types of vehicle brakes and two physical metal wheel chokes, can a vehicle still roll backwards?
Ouch!
being crush by a rover is definitely not a 'nice' way to die, literally.

The brakes can fail since the land rover is a very old vehicle and is in the process of being replaced. No MID number so dunno how old the vehicle is but most SAF rovers are at least 20 yrs old already even the 33 series.
With a wheelchoke in place, the vehicle cannot roll over it.
I even tried having a 5 ton move over a wheelchoke but as long as u don't accelerate etc, normal slight movement of the vehicle will not be able to go over a wheelchoke.

The process itself to activate the recovery vehicle takes time since u cannot juz call it and it comes. U have to go through HQMES and not sure need G3 or not before instructions can be given to the standby unit to drive the recovery vehicle down

Thats how the SAF works, shouldn't be new to everyone right? Do take note that the recovery vehicle is not even station at seletar but either kranji, selarang or jurong from what i know. Not sure whether seletar does recovery anymore since i didn't belong there.

Protocols should always be followed regardless, especially in places like SAF where regiment is concerned.

And the 50km/h public road speed limit should be observed at all times.

wait 1 hrs +++ before the poor officer is lifted off the load he's being pinched on???
What crap is this? should have used a jack or MOBILISE a platoon of people to lift up the jeep (not that heavy, at least lighter than a 3-tonner right?), IDEA is to get him out asap, but wtf! they let the poor guy get pinned down for 1 hr +++ under the HOT SUN???!!
11am-1pm is the hottest period man....wtf the unit is doing?
sure kena 1... the MT specs, drivers, MT line WO...
This is the 2nd time an incident like this has happened at Seletar camp. The last time it was a ST Engg technician who got rolled over by a VOR.
RIP 2LT Chan.

just tragic.
and if you think about it, he was an NSF. enlisted, like almost all of our male population.
certainly didn't ask to be placed in that position / situation.
tragic loss of life.
condolences for the family.
