Mass break-in involving 11 stalls takes place at Hougang hawker centre
SINGAPORE: A hawker centre at Blk 105 Hougang Avenue 1 was the scene of a mass break-in earlier this week.
Three cases of break-ins were discovered on Monday while another eight cases were reported one day later.
Total losses from the cases are estimated to be S$1,000.
Store owners at the hawker centre said the culprits had left many
traces and marks around the stalls on water pipes, gas pipes, stove
hoods and even the lids of rice buckets.
They speculate that more than one burglar was involved in the break-ins and suspect the crimes were committed at night.
However, they said police had informed them that the burglars wore gloves, making it impossible for them to be caught.
The hawker centre was closed on Monday.
This is the first break-in since it was upgraded some three years ago.
Authorities are now considering setting up a night patrol team and
having CCTVs installed at the centre's entrances and exits.
