Despite this tough economic climate, many job seekers are still picky about the kind of jobs they are willing to take on.
Unveiling its report card at its annual meeting today, the South West Community Development Council or CDC found that 40% of job seekers still have unrealistic expectations.
The District received some 6400 job applications from April 2008 to March this year.
Nearly half of those seeking employment assistance through the South West CDC are unreceptive to different work environments and have overblown pay expectations.
Speaking at the South West CDC District meeting, Finance Minister and Adviser to Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisation, Tharman Shanmugaratnam says strengthening and improving the attitudes of these workers is a challenge.
Typical job requests include regular working hours, proximity of workplace to home, an air-conditioned workplace, and unrealistic salaries.
"But these are adjustments that all of us have to make, and frankly if you look at the adjustments being made by people in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, they are very ready to take on any job. No job is beneath a person. If it is an honest job, involves hard work, nothing is beneath us."
Mayor for South West CDC Amy Khor believes that time is needed to help these residents change their employment attitudes.
She doesn't think it's due to complacency, but it's useful to understand their situation.
"I think to a certain extend it is understandable for people who have been so used to a particular job, particular environment, it is understandable that once you get used to such an environment it is difficult to try and adapt and change into a different sector and take up a different job. So, time is really needed to help them to adapt and change their expectations and mindset."
Dr Khor adds that to help this group, the CDC is taking extra effort and time to counsel, put them through mindset training workshops, and encourage them to be more receptive.
Reflecting the weakening economic climate and jobs market, the CDC says the number of employment assistance applications it has received rose by 48% to about 6400 compared to the previous fiscal year.
Of these, the CDC placed more than 2700 job seekers.
However, the average number of job applications for May and June has shown a decline of about 29%.

MP shall lead by example by slashing their extraordinary salaries to meet the present market rate. A 50% cut will be nice.
I feel those job seekers shouldn't be entirely blamed. Some used to work at high positions and it's no surprise that they quote salaries at their expectations.

not to forget that those high positions must have high instalment payment on the way too!
Ya lah ya lah. Everybody get a job that pay low low and work long hours is what the PAP government wants us to do.
the bitchy ruling party loves putting blame on the singaporeans never want to put themselves in their shoes to understand situation.
PAP is exploiting singaporeans. position they offer pays peanut, after CPF take home pay less than $900. With this amount they expect Singaporeans to survival, to cope with their constant rising costs of the living. Besides for people with loan to take care, this amount is not enough. The amount that the govt is paying is not even considered as salary, it looks more like allowance.
Forever point fingers find fault with locals on job searching matter.
I guess the guy and the press that keep making the comments that the people are asking for unrealistic salary should ask the person why instead of making assumptions.
It is just a chain reaction of greed.
It boils down to the cost element.

This is propaganda by the ruling party. For a long time till now they have been brainwashing singaporeans to believe that the local job seekers are the problem.
They always refuse to be willing to accept reality and facts on why people cannot afford to receive meagre pay. They expect locals to be willing to be exploited to accept dirt cheap pay and work on a job which requires more than 1 person's work to cope with their constant rising costs of living, loans, daily essentials, bills and so on, while they continue to happily overpay themselves world class salary. The gap between the poor and rich widens in Singapore.
They only want better life for themselves but not for the ordinary people, selfish sickos!

Read your statement in bold. It's wrong.
Their salaries are not world-class - they're stratospheric and belong to a completely different dimension without parallels, except they haven't got the mettle to justify their worth... ![]()

They are not worth the salary they pay themselves. Someone said this is a new form of corruption.
the Peanut And Panties party
doesnt really care
they wan peanuts which cost S$600.000 and panties that cover ERP that all.
as long as their tooth is sink deep into our wallet, they are happy with just the way they are.
Why is it always the job seekers bearing the brunt for having unrealistic pay expectations? It is time employers be taken to task for offering unrealistic salaries. Of course the PAP government is condoning the practices of employers by opening the floodgates to foreign workers.
No matter how low a salary you accept, there will always be a foreign worker willing to work for less.
Such is the reality of situation in singapore today. ![]()
Many job seekers still unrealistic
What about PAP minister pay, highest in the world, it is realistic?
PAP Minister pay is the highest in the world, is this considered realistic or unrealistic?
Unveiling its report card at its annual meeting today, the South West Community Development Council or CDC found that 40% of job seekers still have unrealistic expectations.
Pay low, work long hours, flood job market with foreign workers, no minimum wage, prices of HDB, food, car all increase.
But PAP minister pay highest in the world.
Realistic?
No matter how low a salary you accept, there will always be a foreign worker willing to work for less.
No Reservist or CPF contribution also for foreign workers.
So who is realistic here?

Would they care to elaborate what kind of jobs that have people unwilling to adjust? Because if its retail, hotel, security, cleaning jobs, i believe there is a certain standard range of salaries offered though there may be some fluctuations depending on firms. So generally those in the industry would know what is the market rate for such jobs.
Are the jobs offered to these people based on the Mkt Rates or is it a clear-cut exploitation by companies on the predicament & the environmnet of these people? Adjustments are definately necessary, the question is to what degree? The purpose of working is to bring food on the table for oneself/ family & cover all household/home expenses.
If the salary of the job is unable to accomplsh this, then how does taking a job solve this problem?
Its certainly easy to say people are picky, rather than look at the kind of jobs that SG creates. We have gone into a knowledge based industry, & the those industries remaining in SG are generic industries, which cannot pay well, due to our high operating cost including Singaporean salaries.
That is why we have some foreigners helping out in these industries. They can accept lower salaries bcause the money is remitted back to their own countries where the standard of living is cheaper. How much does it take to raise & feed a family in Singapore? (Excluding retirement & children's education?)
Do your numbers & perhaps it might explain why some ppl are picky abt jobs, at the end of the day, it takes to 2 hands to clap. let's us never forget that.
