16 bus operators fined for alleged price fixing on express fares to Malaysia
SINGAPORE: Sixteen express bus operators have been fined by the Competition Commission of Singapore for price fixing.
The Competition Commission had issued a proposed infringement decision
in June to the 16 operators and the Express Bus Agencies Association.
The written notice alleged that the firms had fixed prices for
express travel fares to and from various destinations in Malaysia from
2006 to 2008.
The agencies were fined a total of S$1.75 million.
Transtar was fined the heaviest at S$518,167.
Said Sebastian Yap, executive director of Transtar Travel: "We will
urge the Competition Commission of Singapore to reconsider the amount
of penalty imposed. We feel that it's a bit too excessive.
"This might cause us serious damage (on top of) what we are facing now.
We are also facing very, very stiff competition from the various budget
carriers."

CCS to review bus operators' representations in price-fixing case
SINGAPORE: The Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) said Friday it will review representations from 16 bus operators and the Express Bus Agencies Association (EBAA).
This will be done before making a final decision in its investigation against the parties for price-fixing as well as the financial penalties to be imposed, if any.
CCS has issued a written notice against the 16 companies and EBAA for fixing the prices of express bus tickets from Singapore to various destinations in Malaysia from 2006 to 2008.
Following that, the 16 operators and EBAA have been given six weeks to argue the case set out by CCS.
