Strong quake off Indonesia's Sumatra, no tsunami alert
A strong 6.9-magnitude quake struck Indonesia's western Sumatra at 3:38pm this afternnon Singapore time
The country's geophysics agency said that the epicentre of the quake was located 43 kilometres southeast of Siberut in western Sumatra.
It was measured at a depth of 32 kilometres.
No tsunami warning has been issued so far.
Padang, the biggest city in West Sumatra, was a scene of panic after the earthquake struck.
32-year-old Budhi Bakhtiar who lives in Padang says he was resting at home when the quake struck.
And after that, he says his neighbours were even prepared to move to higher ground.
The strong quake in Western Sumatra has caused tremors to be felt in other parts of Indonesia and Singapore as well.
In Pekanbaru in Riau Province, Brad Sanders, a fire and sustainability manager, was having a lunch break when he felt the ground shaking beneath him.
In Singapore, tremors were felt across large parts of the island.
Callers to the MediaCorp news hotline reported tremors in areas like Marine Parade, Beach Road, Punggol, Balestier, Toa Payoh and Potong Pasir.

Buildings declared safe
Engineers from the Housing and Development Board and the Building & Construction Authority have declared 26 buildings safe.
Occupants of the buildings had experienced tremors as a result of the 7.0 Richter scale earthquakes in the waters off Southern Sumatera yesterday,
Most of the buildings were HDB blocks, with four private residential buildings and 6 commercial buildings.
The engineers confirmed that the structural integrity of the buildings were not affected by the tremors.

so how do they know the building are safe just by visual inspection?
did they used any Gama Ray to scan ? how do they know there are no hair line crack within the structure?
