Singaporeans are happy. Very happy
Singaporeans are a happy lot, in fact more so than the people in several other Asian countries.
This according to survey done by a Japanese University which polled over 8,000 people across China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.
The survey on values, lifestyles, satisfaction and quality of life of the people, showed that nearly 80 per cent of the 1000 Singaporeans surveyed said that were either 'quite ' or ' very happy '.
Compare this to the Japanese and the Vietnamese, who scored between 60 and 65 per cent in this area.
So what worries an average Singaporean ?
Unemployment came up tops, even though the poll was done in 2006, when the economy was doing well.
Second came Terrorism, followed by healthcare, natural disasters and wars.
These results were analysed and recently published in a book put together by three professors from the National University of Singapore's Business School.
Dr Tambyah Siok Kuan, who was one of the professors involved, on whether there could be discrepancies in the survey findings with the recent economic crisis.
" I think we might see a dampening of sentiments, in terms of the optimism of Singaporeans in terms of their future and economic prospects. I do not think we will see a plummeting of this index, if you can call this an index. We wont see a drastic reduction in levels. We will probably see lower levels but like I said even in good times, the index or sentiments on economic propects are still there, people are still concern about their jobs. But I think we do see a fairly stable plateau of the satisfaction levels over the years. "
Besides the happiness factor, the respondents who were between 20 and 69 years old, were also asked what they would like their children to grow up to be.
Most said they would like their children, regardless of gender, to grow up caring about their family.
The results in other East Asian countries were more contrasting between the genders.
A majority of the parents in these countries would like their daughter to find a good marriage partner, while they expect their son to grow up to be a loving and charitable person.

But in this materialistic world, no money no talk. ![]()
in Singapore, you must praise the govt lei..
if you insult them ah, i'm sorry, you need to go to the prison.
In sg best is to keep the gap shut.
Praise the wrong way, you need to go to the prison too.![]()
All the respondents must be party goers at Zouk or St. James on Friday or Saturday after 2am. ![]()
Either that or the questionaire was bias.
1.) Do you like living in Singapore? (5 = Love to Death; 0 = Hate It).
a) 5
b) 4
c) 3
d) (25)^(0.5)
e) [5th Fibonacci number)

Why a 3 year old cheery article posted now? Any relevancy with the current down swing mood?

They dare not face the music on how unhappy singaporeans are now so they are left with no choice but use the old data.
If they do a current survey, i am sure they will get lots of negative feedback.

Not sure election soon, no money outlay this round in ND Rally.
Or a trick?
aunty she is a profession under the marketing department....
After thought:
Since Dr Tambyah Siok Kuan is a professor from NUS under marketing department. I presumed that this report was targeted towards businesses indicator. Rather than as a political indicator.
I think result of this nature once taken out from its original context can be misdirected particularly in political interpretation. I am not sure if this consumer indicator should be used as Measuring of social content which is relevant to reflect Singaporean perspective on government performance. If question are phrase differently the result could be World Apart.
What i believe could also be counter productive; If the objective is to inject a paradigm shift of social discontent into the street, than the paradox could be seen even more skeptics and cynical about the news from the practical nature of Singaporean. Or this report could also reflected that Singaporeans are Mentally politically "BLOCK" which has shown no interest in "Politics" They just want to get rich and move out.
I recalled during the US presidential elections we have forumners in Sing who are politcal analyst quantitatively predicted Hiliary will be the nominated President. Guess NOW they maybe out of Job by now.
I am not saying we enjoyed to be cynically displeasured but if we are to do a political survey than it should stick to a political survey. Not plug from a consumer report to a political interpretation.
dont forget the ad on look on the positive side..just kind awondering..the monkey complains hes getting paid with peanuts and the big burly elephant says to the monkey that its ok cuz he likes peanuts anyway..so does it mean its ok for singaporeans to get paid little as we love getting small pay packages??
