Singapore sales people not the most keen to close a sale
Salespeople in Singapore are apparently not among the most enthusiastic in the region in sealing a deal.
A survey by performance improvement firm, Grass Roots, found that only 25 percent of salespeople here made the effort to close a sale.
That's half of the average score obtained by their counterparts in the Asia Pacific.
Grass Roots attributes the result to Singapore's retail methodology, which seems to use features and benefits more than a more direct approach.
Salespeople here were also less likely to make a brand recognition and scored low on establishing and meeting needs.
But it adds that salespeople here demonstrated high product knowledge and were marginally ahead of the regional average in terms of overall sales effectiveness.
The organisation conducted mystery shopping tests in 7 Asia Pacific countries, including Australia, China and South Korea during the month of June.
The tests found that only 56 percent of mystery shoppers rated their salesperson as "excellent" or "good" in establishing needs.
And only 61 percent of shoppers found their salesperson to be good or excellent in meeting their needs.
Grass Roots estimates that could be losing out on US$250,000 per store annually, due to ineffective sales performance.

agree, Singapore is very small, info etc price, specs can be readliy avaiable.
Moreover, Singaporeans are Savvy in terms of sourcing, our low corruption rates all means that the consumers, more or less would have decided what to buy in the 1st few rounds of meeting.
Our conversment in rojak in between singlish, mandarin and dialect.
It can be lingusitcally limiting to bring across the desired message.
(again english 1st language or Mandarin, our government's linguistic approach is confusing at best)
I think that could be the reason why sales ppl not effective in closing sales.
Moreover, it all depends on the product and Industry (we have a small industry to begin with) that one is peddling too.
Any guys wanna share thier sales experience here?
I don't know about others but I try not to close sales sometimes. Reason being, I know that my production team cannot cope with the workload and that there's just not enough manpower to handle the order. Simple as that -- nothing due to laziness or lack of desire.
I guess that sometimes its more of an appreciation of the current situation at hand.
I know that there are some salesperson who go all out to capture all the sales that they can, and in the end not able to furnish the service/products that they tout.
