Because he wants to take more prc come here look china man and china girl work at coffeeshops. Then how about malay or indian people cant they order coffee in peace. The Singapore jobmarket is spoiled because of this. What next all sign boards in Mandarin? Hey all english is the main language in the world who the hell say mandarin. Instead of looking so far why not look at Malaysia, Indonesia even Thialand. china only know how to copy people and because of their low cost of living their products are cheap and accepted eventho their products are proven worthless and dangerous but if their cost of living goes up our investments are seriously screwed big time. Old senile people must step down ASAP hes been in power too long.

I think TS has misconstrued the linked article to say that Mandarin is going to be the official language of Singaporean, where I believe LKY meant Singaporean Chinese, who speak Canto, Hokkien and the various dialects, and where some are just not so fluent in Mandarin.
Anyway, I don;t see how Mandarin will be the mother tongue of a Malay, an Indian, an Eurasian -- because its just not logical. Malays speak malay, Indian speak tamil, and eurasian, well they speak whatever they want to.

Yes the Malays will speak Malay, the Indians will speak their language, so will the Eurasians. They will also speak English, and and inevitably patois Mandarin.
Singapore is in South East Asia, it is nowhere near China. Vietnam, Laos are closer to China, and they are not being Sino-nised. It is chauvinism that moves Singapore towards adopting Mandarin. This is in total disregard for the Malay Archipelago. Under the call to maintain social harmony, some out-of-bound markers were set in political/social discussions. This gave the government the opportunity to advance their inherent agenda, which is blatantly obvious, but can't be discussed.
We have suspected the gradual conversion of Singapore into a Chinese state some time ago. This was vehemently denied of course. Now we know that it was intended all along that the process be evolvd to what was desired.
The unintended consequences will be that Singapore will be sieged.
Are the USA and PRC intended to be our big brothers?
We should think deeper, rather than just bellyache and scrape the surface.
