SINGAPORE: This year's first Student Art Competition helped attract a young crowd to the Singapore Art Museum.
Some 200 art pieces were submitted to the inaugural competition, a
fringe event of this year's Singapore Art Show. The exhibition hopes to
promote appreciation of visual arts, especially among the young.
"Art is that, you can do anything you like," said Andre Seah, a
primary three student at the Red Swastika School. "Even if it doesn't
exist, you can still draw it... draw it out, and then make some
colours, and then, you just paint."
Said Lim Chwee Seng, director for visual arts at the National Arts
Council: "It's not that we want all of them to be artists, it'd be
great if they become artists eventually... but to start them young,
developing an interest and appreciation for visual arts."
Artist Chun Kaifeng followed his aspirations and eventually bagged the Singapore Art Exhibition award.
However, he was not present to receive his prize of S$50,000 as he is currently pursuing his Masters of Fine Art in Glasgow.
His award winning contemporary art installation piece will be on display at the Singapore Art Museum until Sunday.
