Collapsed of crane gantry, first in 20 years - MOM
Singapore’s Manpower Ministry has described the collapse of a crane
gantry at a shipyard in Pandan Road on Tuesday as a rare incident -
the first, in 20 years.
Initial investigations by the Ministry showed that the girdle of the crane had buckled during the lifting process.
One Chinese national, 20-year-old Liu Wei died on the spot after he was pinned under the collapsed crane.
Three other workers were hurt.
Two have since been discharged from the hospital.
MOM said it is currently investigating how the accident may have occurred.
These include - whether the crane was structurally sound to carry out
the works, if it was overloaded or if the workers were competent to
handle the machine.
MOM said the company involved, Hiap Shing, is now working with a professional engineer to safely remove the collapsed crane.
The Ministry is also examining the company's overall safety management.
It added there were two fatalities involving gantry cranes in the past three years.
But this is first time a whole crane gantry has collapsed.
There are over 2, 000 gantry cranes registered island-wide.
