though some malay blogger did start a fund raising exercise for the damaged churches ... apparently, the response was quite multiracial .... some malay farmer wanted to sell his goat for the cause ....

your guess is as good as mine
I've just read a couple of online editorials that got me thinking.....
UMNO is really the loser in all of this.... by tacitly allowing the Friday protests to go on, they were trying to gain the support of the Malay-Muslim majority. Instead, what has happened is that they're probably gonna lose even more ground due to this debacle.
They could have said something like 'Hey, let's support the court decision, and let's analyze why this issue is really a non-issue...' and used all their apparatus to educate and convince the masses about their stand. In which case, they might have lost some of their more extreme-minded supporters, but would have won over the non-Muslims and the majority moderate Muslims in the process.
Instead, it was PAS and Anwar who came across as the voices of moderation and reason.... they put out statements which effectively said 'Hey, when you think about it, it's not a big deal at all.....' Certainly their more reasoned approach would lead to greater support for them.
So, really, by trying to win the support of the masses, all UMNO has done is to get itself kicked in the read end and to drive away support for itself.... ![]()

Linkie: http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/index.php/malaysia/49126-anwar-meets-christians-to-defuse-tension
To quote the article:
“With respect to the use of the word Allah, for example, it cannot be disputed that Arabic speaking Muslims, Christians and Jews have collectively prayed to God as Allah throughout the last 14 centuries,” said Anwar.
“While sensitivities over its usage have arisen in Malaysia, the way to resolve these conflicts is not by burning churches and staging incendiary protests but by reasoned engagement and interreligious dialogue,” he added.
Sounds like a pretty reasoned and objective statement to me. At least it beats the ruling party backing the Friday protests and not supporting interfaith public dialogues.
no offence but the police in malaysia are pretty dumb. they go to every of the already hit churches and set up patrols there. whre gt people wld be so dumb to go and attack the same place 2 times. instead, they should be on the look out for other churches which havent been attacked yet. haiz

that's the one thing i could not fathom - they allow these protests (knowing full well it would stoke racial sentiments) to go on but clamp down on any other protests/rally, even those organised by groups like the bar council for universal (less sensitive?) issues eg human rights, detention without trail which affects everyone/all races

As was previously mentioned - they allowed the protests so as to be seen to be pandering to the Malay-Muslim majority.
Doesn't matter if it sounds dumb so long as they can win lost support. That seems to be their line of thought. ![]()
But as we've seen, they may lose even more support in the long run all thanks to their stupidity. This is ultimate self-pwnage. ![]()
let's have some sound bytes from the other side of the fence ...

be forewarned you'll hear things like "enemy of islam" etc etc in this chap's ravings.
this chap's the fellow that ah badz highlighted.
what many don't know, is that he's already achieved internet notoriety two years ago and earned himself a fascist label.
"Those who feel very strongly about it, this is going to offend some people I don't give a damn, they should have it tattooed on their chest like what Adolf Hitler did, you know, this is a Jew right?, and they had tattoos. So those who are now so adamant on not wanting to be buried as a Muslim, or whatever, for whatever reason, they should have it tattooed on their chest"
"I think they should tattoo it on their chest or forehead 'I am a kafir'."
just put these passages into google and you'll get the links, or you can also search raja petra's (yes the redoubtable chap) blog.
he should tattoo "i'm a fuckwit" on his forehead ![]()
actually, I was told tattoos are forbidden for muslims .... will have to ask fudgie about that.
nevermind then.. the use of a sharpie also can..
like this:
