A 59-YEAR-OLD doctor who appealed against her two-week jail term for drink driving has had the sentence reduced to a $5,000 fine.
Dr Irene Lim Kay Hian, a senior consultant radiologist at the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, looked relieved after her appeal was allowed. She remains banned from driving for four years.
Justice Chao Hick Tin said he will give written reasons for his decision at a later date.
Dr Lim’s lawyer, Senior Counsel Sant Singh, argued that her decision to drive was not deliberate but arose out of her distraught state when she got a phone call in the middle of the night saying that a close aunt was in a bad state in hospital.
On her way to the National University Hospital, Dr Lim’s car stalled along the Pan Island Expressway near the Clementi Avenue 6 exit.
A patrol officer with the Expressway Monitoring Advisory System who checked on the car, noticed the woman smelt of alcohol and the Traffic Police was called in. A breathalyser test at the police station showed she had 129 mcg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, nearly four times the legal limit of 35 mcg. – Straits Times
what a lame excuse... she can alway get a cab.... sg law protect the rich..fark
Drink drive shld ban for life.
fucking disgrace.
So many drink drive cases in spore.
Totally pathetic. I would have expected the judge to increase her jail time upon appeal, as was the case with Christopher Lee.
Sure, she may have been in a distraught state of mind, but there's nothing stopping her from calling a cab. Certainly that would have been far less costly than if she had crashed into a divider or knocked down a pedestrian.
Very unfair sentence indeed....the law seems to protect the rich and famous in singapore....
Isn't drink driving a very serious offence? Wonder what those in the future who cook up similar excuses will get.
give her a break la.....the papers alrdy said she is depressed over a family matter and she prob stopped her car at the road shoulder to recover from her drunken stupor. All mitigating factors.
Maybe she got connection, who knows.

Every monkey with a Class 3 knows that if you drink, you jolly well don't drive.
She may be depressed, but that shouldn't have stopped her from calling a cab.
If anything, if she had already known that she was drunk and feeling distraught in the middle of the night, taking a cab would be a far better option than driving.
