A lawyer has been struck off the roll and ordered to pay $8,000 to the Law Society after he overcharged a client.
Low Yong Sen charged a client some $13,650 as legal costs for her divorce proceedings.
This after being told by the lawyer's secretary that the initial legal costs was between $2,000 and $3,000.
Feeling cheated, the client complaned to the Law Society in 2004.
Low is also believed to be the first lawyer who has appeared more than
once before the Court of Three Judges for systemically overcharging
clients.
In May 2005 Low was reprimanded and fined by the Law Society for
charging a hawker three times more than what was reasonable for a
divorce case.
He charged his client $46,589.
In August 2008, Low was suspended for six months by the Court of Three
Judges for overcharging a couple for conveyancing services.
He had charged them $4,300 in expenses three times more than what was fair.
The Law Society is still deciding on the outcome of a fourth complaint against Low for overcharging a client in 2008.
