A Swiss national who had failed to declare that he had 58 gold coins in
his possession when he arrived at Changi Airport on March the 2nd has
been fined $3,000.
The subordinate court said 46-year-ol Theveraja Thambirajah will spend
three weeks in jail if he can't pay the fine.
He had told Immigration and Checkpoints officers that he had nothing to
declare.
But when his luggage was screened and physically checked, officers found
the gold coins in a purse within the luggage.
The coins were valued at nearly $21,000.
The GST on them amounted to $1,460.
Theveraja admitted ownership and was detained by ICA officers.
Singapore Customs investigations revealed that Theveraja had no
intention to declare and pay the GST on the gold coins.
In general, Singapore Customs said all goods imported into Singapore,
regardless of whether they are dutiable or non-dutiable are subject to
7% GST.

Switzerland is a land of immigrants like Singapore... Albeit a bit lesser only.
Fcuking racist? But yeah, its good to be racist. Racism is good and cool. But in Singapore you have to be a silent racist, thats bad. Makes me sad. When are we going to have racial riots in SIngapore again? I look forward to it!!!

Really meh. The t-shirts I buy at Phuket and bring back also subject ot GST?
I think the gold coins have to declare, because of anti money laundering laws to counter terrorism.
He must have learned this trick as an Indian Singaporean but he forgot he is not a white man even if he holds a Swiss Passport...so easy to be a target for security check in SIngapore when you look and talk like a local.

This is the time of trans-migration going on around the World so people shouldnt see race as a problem. If ang mor can migrate to ther parts and be welcome I dont see why people of other skin color cant go to their countries to become tax payers there. You say Swiss = German+French+Austrian+Italian ??? and We say Singapore =Chinese,Malay,Indian,Others???

go read up the notice properly..
if you are overseas for more than 48 hours and you are more than 18 years old, you are allowed up to $300 GST relief..
which means if you buy stuff more than $300, you will have to pay GST on the balance... meaning if you buy things worth $500, you will have to pay GST for $500 - $300 = $200.. meaning 7% of $200 or $14...
go ask the ICA people at the Red Channel that you want to go to the Singapore Customs fellas to pay
