Singapore has sufficient water supply, will not need to renew water contract with Malaysia in 2011
Minister for Enviroment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim has reiterated that Singapore will not renew its water contract with Malaysia when it expires in 2011.
This is one of the two water contracts the Republic has with Malaysia.
The second agreement expires in 2061.
Dr Yaacob reassured Parliament that Singapore would have an adequate
water supply.
" We have augmented our local catchments with the Marina, Punggol and
Serangoon reservoirs. Singapore's water catchement area will increase
from half to two thirds of our land area, when these 3 reservoirs are
completed by 2011. New water supply is also being ramped up
concurrently. With the completion of the new water plant in Changi in
2010, new water will be able to meet 30 percent of Singapore's water
needs. In addition the desalination plants completed in 2005 can further
meet about 10 percent of Singapore's water needs. "

Wah...
Let's see Dr M's reaction.
He thought by jacking up e water price he can let his next gen collect more revenue.
Newater meets 30% demand
SENIOR Minister Goh Chok Tong officially opened Singapore's fifth and biggest NEWater plant on Monday.
Together with the existing four NEWater plants, the Sembcorp NEWater Plant will be able to meet 30 per cent of Singapore's total water demand, up from 15 per cent previously. There are plans to expand capacity to meet 40 per cent of Singapore's total water needs by 2020, said SM Goh.
A winner of the Global Water Awards 2010 Water Reuse Project of the Year, the new facility is the only large-scale water recycling plant in the world to be housed on top of a water reclamation plant. It purifies treated used water from the Changi Water Reclamation Plant, which collects and treats used water from the eastern half of Singapore.
Introduced in 2003, NEWater plays an important role in Singapore's drive towards eventual self-sufficiency. Industrial demand for the recycled water has grown 15-fold, from 4 million gallons per day (or mgd) in 2003 to some 60 mgd today, said SM Goh.
He added: 'Because of our sustained efforts we have come a long way in water self-sufficiency. When the first of our two Water Agreements with Malaysia expires next year, we will not be renewing it.
'By 2061 when the second Water Agreement expires, we can also be totally self-sufficient if there is no new water agreement with Malaysia.'

wait water price increase we sad.
Dr M would be the one to suffer most.
Last time think bashing us would get him to win points.
Now seems the most silly.
S'pore & Johor officials discuss expiry of 1961 Water Agreement
JOHOR : Officials from Singapore and Johor met on Friday in Johor to discuss matters relating to the expiry of a water agreement.
A Joint Technical Committee (JTC) and Joint Working Group (JWG)
will be handling the transition of assets and operations.
The 1961 Water Agreement will expire next year, but Singapore's national
water agency PUB said it will continue to import water under the 1962
Water Agreement which will expire in 2061.
PUB also said it has put in place the Four National Taps strategy to
ensure that there will be a diversified and sustainable supply of water
to meet Singapore's water needs.
The Four National Taps are water from local catchments, NEWater,
desalinated water and imported water from Johor.

this is good
but what do we do abt the brine we get from desalinating the sea water?
dump them? or what?
Good, see what they can do now.
Not happy, threaten us this and that.
next will threaten not to sell us their eggs
now our turn to guai lan liao?
anyways now Johor whole day kpkb no water.
It's good that Singapore is taking steps to be self-sufficient in water, regardless of political relationship between the 2 countries.
The only concern is: how will water prices react after the expiry?
continuing innovation is the way forward to our current achievement for a sustainable future against negative external political influences....at least we would not be led by the nose.....
no doubt we need oppositions....but its important to usher in genuine ones rather than mere taking the political stage for personal gains and gambit...beware of those who work from the outside against our motherland....

didn't we survived because we were forced to one corner by M'sia?
Dun ever forget they thought they could cut our water supply or think we would economically weak to survive and later beg them into the M'sia federation under UNNO's condition.
Like it or not tat's why NS came abt.
water and politics
aunties will start stocking up water
agreed....we have come a long way with a strong infrastructure laid by the ruling party...
but sustainability requires transparency and different perspectives - not just one voice and more voices to move forward...making it stronger and greater

you think abt it... The PAP simply has to start learning how to listen to those who could suggest. This is everyone's home n everyone's getting educated.
agree with u ...we need oppositions...and i fully support but genuine ones
but the objective is the genuine concern towards a sustaining future ....genuine oppositions and not mere party politics .....
sometimes not necessary to do it using politics.. can do so as a normal citizen.
Sg should strive to be self sufficient in all areas,
be it chickens, eggs, blah blah
and i support the nuclear power idea
2010 to 2061 ( 51 years to go b4 the 2nd water agreement expires... ) by that time.. most of the forumers here already 6 foot under.... why bother ???

Worry abt future generations ma.
has anyone ever considerd the ecological impact of desalinating sea water b4?
i mean, sg is not the only country to do so, but many other thirsty countries do desalinate sea water
when this happens, the balance in salinity is affected, affecting plants & animals that rely on them and so on
