SINGAPORE: A type of coloured wristband that has sparked controversy in Brazil appears to have a small following in Singapore.
The wristband hit the news when a 13-year-old girl was raped by
three boys.
Brazilian police said the crime was motivated by the girl's black
bracelet which, in the game, means the wearer is willing to have sex
with the person who breaks it.
Despite the ban in Brazil, these bracelets are widely available in shops
at Far East Plaza.
They come in threes and cost up to $2.
Sales have been good too. Most of the customers here are young boys and
girls.
But the fad may be losing its appeal now.
Some youths our news team spoke to said they didn't know the hidden
message of the bracelet - that wearing the wristband could mean
willingness to a range of sexual activities.
One youth said: "No it's just not my style (to wear it)."
Another remarked: "There is a meaning but I don't believe in it. I think
it's supposed to be like a sex band or something. I just stopped
wearing it because it doesn't match my clothes."
