MOE replaces principal
THE Education Ministry (MOE) is replacing a principal under investigation for alleged 'irregularities in procurement procedure'.
Last week, students at Hai Sing Catholic School in Pasir Ris were told Mr Charles Surin would be away temporarily working on a project at the MOE's headquarters.
But two days ago, students were told he would be replaced by Madam Judina Chua, the former principal of Montfort Junior School, who would take over the school's leadership on June 2 after she returns from her studies in the United States.
It is understood the students were not told of the replacement until Thursday as the mid-year examinations were still in progress.
In a statement last night, the MOE said the principal had been redeployed to facilitate its investigation. While the ministry would not provide any details as investigations are under way, it is understood he may not have followed proper procedure in hiring some of the external vendors for the school.
Mr Surin, who was a high-profile principal commended in 2006 by the MOE as a successful example of a mid-career educator, declined to comment when contacted by The Straits Times last night.
