Bilbao clinches inaugural LKY World City Prize
May 19, 2010 SINGAPORE -
Bilbao City Hall has been named the inaugural Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize Laureate in recognition of its integrated and holistic approach to urban transformation.
The award focuses on the four key pillars of liveability, vibrancy, sustainability and quality of life, which are fundamental to the success of every city.
The Urban Redevelopment Authority, co-organiser of the award, said these qualities were demonstrated in the northern Spanish city's radical transformation from a post-industrial society to a vibrant metropolis.
The Mayor of Bilbao, Dr Inaki Azkuna, will receive the award from Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew at a ceremony on June 29. The prize includes $300,000 in cash, a gold medallion and a certificate.
Three nominees from a total of 78 were also selected for special mention: The City of Melbourne; Mr Jaime Lerner, former Mayor of Curitiba and Governor of the State of Parana in Brazil; and the Chief Minister of New Delhi, Ms Sheila Dikshit.
