SINGAPORE : Fewer students are dropping out of schools.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) said the overall attrition rate, or
the percentage of the Primary One cohort who do not complete secondary
education, has steadily decreased, with the most recent figure standing
at 1.2 per cent.
And part of the credit goes to institutions like Northlight School,
which saw its pioneer batch reuniting as alumni on Saturday morning.
The school was set up in 2007, for students who study better through
hands-on learning.
It admits those who have failed their Primary School Leaving Examination
(PSLE) twice.
The MOE said the attrition rate of 1.5 per cent was achieved two years
earlier than had been projected.
"I think it will further reduce as we better our pedagogy for our
students in all subjects, whether it's maths or science. (We) try to
reduce it (attrition rate) as much as possible. I know we can't get it
to zero, but we are already one of the lowest in the world," said
Masagos Zulkifli, Singapore Senior Parliamentary Secretary for
Education.
