JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained eight Singaporeans for trying to bribe police personnel here.
State MACC director Simi Abdul Ghani said the Singaporeans aged between 27 and 66 were detained for offering bribes to the police officers after they were caught for various traffic offences.
They had attempted to offer bribes ranging from RM20 to RM110.
“These offenders were held during a three-day joint operation between the MACC and state police which began on Friday,” he said.
“Anyone convicted for the offence can be jailed a maximum of 20 years and fined not more than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher,” he added.
All the offenders have since been released on MACC bail.
“Don’t try to bribe government officials or law enforcement officers, as the MACC is always looking into these cases,” Simi said. - The Star (Malaysia)

'Kopi money' risk
SINGAPORE drivers in the habit of slipping RM50 (S$21.30) to Malaysian enforcement officers when stopped for speeding across the Causeway may have received their most serious warning yet.
This act of bribery - which some describe as paying a 'speeding toll' - saw eight Singaporeans detained over the Vesak Day weekend.
About 16,000 Singapore vehicles, excluding motorcycles, enter Malaysia every day. Among them were those driven by the eight men and women who were nabbed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly offering bribes of between RM20 and RM110 to settle their traffic offences. The eight, aged between 27 and 66, were released on bail.
