AN AMERICAN report accusing Singapore of not doing enough to curb sex and labour trafficking has been lambasted by the Singapore Government.
The United States State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons (Tip) report said Singapore's performance in dealing with 'modern slavery' had worsened over the last year.
This resulted in the Republic being placed on a human trafficking watch list for the first time, alongside countries such as Bangladesh, China and India.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) called the report more of a 'political ritual than an objective study'.
In a blunt rebuttal, a ministry spokesman said: 'How, for example, can the US rank itself in Tier 1 when it is well known that it has been unable to stem a flood of illegal workers, many of whom are trafficked by organised criminal gangs?'
The 10th annual report for the first time included a ranking of the US, which it said was 'based on the same standards to which we hold other countries'.

S'pore responds to US human trafficking report
SINGAPORE: The Singapore government has issued a detailed response to the US State Department's Trafficking In Persons Report 2010.
The document was conveyed by Singapore's Ambassador in Washington
DC, Chan Heng Chee, at her meetings with Kurt Campbell, Assistant
Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and Luis CdeBaca,
Ambassador-at-Large, Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in
Persons.
The report had alleged that Singapore is a destination for women
subjected to trafficking in persons and that the Singapore government
demonstrated limited law enforcement efforts to combat trafficking in
persons during the year.
In its response, Singapore says it has a comprehensive three-pronged
approach of prevention, prosecution and victim assistance which the US
has chosen to ignore.
This framework has proven to be a "effective deterrent" in the
trafficking of persons to Singapore and this is borne out by the
extremely low number of substantiated cases.
The report said that some foreign embassies here told the US reporting
team that they identified 105 female sex trafficking victims.
However, Singapore says that the police received only three reports of
alleged trafficking from foreign embassies during the period under
review.
Singapore added that it has a very strict immigration regime and its
tough enforcement actions and security checks detect and deter the
movement of illegal immigrants in and out of Singapore. - CNA/jm

Yeap...i think the key issued is if they admit trafficking than there is Sex trade.
Those free lance sex workers only come in for few months make some money and leaves. the foreign prostitute workers here are so called "sponsored" by club owner or organized crime its hard to tell how the "network" is being established unless you are in the line there is always a need for "Fresh meat"
U.S. should stop wasting resources on such issues. they should take a good look at their debt and make good use of their limited resources.
the americans are advised to spend the money on their domestic issues and stop meddling in other countries' affair.

that is because you have no idea how the system of governments works? It shows the "independent" within their branch of govt.
It has nothing to do with wasting resources or they are perfect domestics internally. Its more of upholding "Principle".
the key issue is not to deny the problems. The key issues is to face the problems and recognized the short fall and fight against organized sex trade trafficking collectively.
S’pore says it doesn’t have serious trafficking problem
