SINGAPORE: The football World Cup is proving to be a powerful driving force behind the surge in the sales of bigger TV sets equipped with the latest technology in Singapore.
According to market research firm GfK Asia, football fans
contributed to an increase in sales of LED TV sets, particularly of 40-
and 42-inch screen sizes.
The boost in sales was in fact experienced by TV manufacturers and
retailers across Asia.
In the first week of June alone, combined sales of high-definition (HD)
and full high-definition (FHD) TV in eight Asian markets - Hong Kong,
Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam -
reached almost 90,000 units, hitting a total value in excess of US$73
million.
GfK Asia says this reflects a massive 250 percent growth in units sold
compared to the same period last year.
FHD TV proved to be slightly more popular, while 30- to 45-inch screens
were the most common sizes snapped up by consumers.
They make up about 70 percent of total TV sets sold.
GfK Asia's regional account director for consumer electronics, Jasmine
Lim, said the World Cup is a global phenomenon that attracts a lot of
television audience all over the world.
