SINGAPORE: Seven local cyclists lost their lives in road accidents in Singapore between January and May this year.
The number is more than double the three persons killed in the same period last year.
To promote safe cycling, the Traffic Police is organising clinics with a group of volunteers known as the Safe Cycling Task Force.
These are conducted at community clubs and grassroots events to reach out to cyclists in the neighbourhoods.
In line with this initiative, Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs, Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, urged cyclists to be properly attired and adopt good cycling behaviour.
This includes maintaining lane discipline and using hand signals.
He was speaking at the launch of the annual Road Safety Outreach and Road Safety Campaign.
Associate Professor Ho also said that there were no fatalities involving foreign workers on bicycles during the first five months of this year.
In the same period last year, there were three fatalities.
Associate Professor Ho attributed this decrease to Traffic Police's road safety initiatives to educate foreign workers.
The authorities have been working closely with dormitories and employers to reach out to foreigners, while the Traffic Police will press on with educational efforts and enforcement action.

Agreed.
I think they kinda missed the point. One of the main contributing factors to the accident and fatality rate is motorists being assholes.

now ur being irrational here.
either way dun make sense.
They can't cycle on pavements (ours is narrow) less park connector and they've to keep to e side of e road.
In any case, speeding kills anyone. I've seen many a times accidents be it w/ pedestrains or cyclist is all thks to travelling abv speed limit.
please lah. we dont ban cyclists just because there are accidents.
people die in driving accidents. so do we ban driving?

haha lol
Teach them how to cycle lah. On pathways they already cut across pedestrian like nobody's business, & at road, they zig zag around, sometimes go up pathway & sometimes go back to the road. Like that can blame who? Blame only themselves.
Anyway you need to wear helmet, elbow pads while cycling, i see most of them breaking this rule anyway.
like that S'pore can come up with world's first safety belt and airbag for bicycles mah............!

the point is....there are car accidents but people have a chance of surviving cos they are in a metal structure. Cyclists are instant death.
