MR ERIC J. Brooks was right to disagree with the Singaporean view in his letter last Thursday ("Foreigners are not why we don't do well"). His comments hit the bull's eye on the shortcomings of Singaporeans when dealing with the subject of foreigners studying or working in Singapore.
There are many ways to show allegiance to one's nation. A deep sense of insecurity engulfs us whenever the issue of foreigners creeps up. Yet, we are not averse to exploiting the opportunities for ourselves abroad.
We have seen hundreds of our top students going abroad yearly to gain a world-class education at top universities. Singaporeans unreservedly invest millions in foreign lands. Yet, whenever we are faced with issues of foreigners taking advantage of what we have to offer, we take issue. We have to learn to face the world in an impartial manner.
Perhaps we should examine our own attitudes.
A true Singaporean's national identity should be exhibited through his adherence to values cited in our National Pledge: justice and equality. Resilience during times of adversity, a tenacity to overcome challenges, and a touch of humanity towards fellow human beings of all nationalities should be the keys to success.
