Worker’s Party member: Why more young graduates are joining the opposition- By Ion Danker – July 14th, 2010
Opposition member Gerald Giam, 33, says more young, educated Singaporeans are joining the opposition because they want to see real change from the top.
Once a Foreign Service Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Giam is now one of the 13 council members elected to the Central Executive Committee of the Workers’ Party.
Giam — who is now a senior IT consultant — is part of a new breed of university graduates who have joined the opposition and want to make a difference.
“What I realised is that if you want to see real change in Singapore, it has to be from the top. I joined the WP because I felt I could contribute towards this and do my part for Singapore,” the Bachelor of Science graduate from the University of Southern California told Yahoo! Singapore.
But why the opposition and not the ruling People’s Action Party?
“It was a process, getting to know people at WP, understanding their beliefs and values and when I interacted with them over two years, a lot of them were honest, intelligent and sincere people who placed the interest of Singaporeans ahead of themselves. I felt this is as a good team of people to work with to bring a better Singapore,” said the married father of a little girl.
During his one and a half years in the MFA, Giam said his duties involved analysing political and economic reports and providing policy advice on developments concerning Singapore’s strategic interests.
“It wasn’t at MFA that I decided to join the opposition,” he explained. “I had a good experience at the MFA and it allowed me to observe how the government worked at the highest level,” he added.
He shares why he made the leap into politics and why more educated young women and men are joining him.
Look out for the full interview with Gerald Giam and find out if he will be contesting in the next general election on Yahoo! SingaporeScene this Friday.

They join WP becos they are fed up with PM Lee's pork barrel
politics and want to give LHL and his 'Pork Barrel Politicians' a run
for their money?
CNA 03 May 2006 1839 hrs (SST)
SINGAPORE : Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says Singapore is at the
top of its game because of a strong political system and quality
leadership.
[full
video]
He seems to have started to "solve this week's problem and forget about
next year's challenges" and "spend all my time thinking what's the right
way to fix them"
As revealed, his next considered step would be par of course to "buy
supporters votes".
Hopefully WP comes up clean in the next general elections...
