Yio Chu Kang Secondary School will be celebrating its 45th anniversary this month and STOMPer Buntalk is unhappy that the school has asked its students to contribute $50 for the celebrations.
The STOMPer explained that even the performers have to pay, even when they are contributing to the celebrations.
The STOMPer wrote:
“Yio
Chu Kang Secondary school will be celebrating its 45th anniversary this
coming month and last week they asked the performers to sell the
tickets at $50 each.
“And today, they actually forced everyone
in the school to contribute $50 from Edusave and it is compulsory, even
some Edusave accounts are empty.
“They will have to pay in cash.
"In
a letter sent to all the students, it states: ‘To achieve a high
standard of productions for this musical, we have invested heavily in
engaging the expertise of various specialists and vendors in training
the students. We seek your support in releasing $50 from your
child's/ward's Edusave Account to help defray some of the cost’
“And
from what I know, these ‘expertise’ are instructors who are paid by the
students yearly, by Edusave to teach different areas of talent such as
the Enrichment programme which is in the school timetable so I don't see
the need to pay another $50 where the students have already paid.
"Even the performers have to pay for it where they do not get to view the performance at all.
“Plus the performance only includes Dance, Drama, Band and Choir. Does that really worth that much of money?
“Or
are they just trying to get more money out of it? If the school doesn't
have that much of money then they shouldn't even host this celebration
and having the programme at all.”
They allows the deduction of $50 from Edusave for school anniversary celebrations?
Enrichment event huh?

Assuming 10 classes x 40 students per level from Sec 1-4, and two more Sec 5 classes, we have (4*10*40)+ (2*40) = 1680 students.
So they are asking for a total of 1680*$50 = $84,000.
Seriously, a production costing $84,000? And how does it benefit the students?

$84'000 is really ridiculous just for an assembly.
$50 is roughly the cost of one tuition class anyway. However, I wonder if the school thought of making it an option for needy students. Edusave or otherwise, it's still money that can be used for field trips and things like that.
Wonder if there is any food and drinks provided????
$50 sounds a lot if its just performance!
i severely doubt this is an appropriate use of edusave.
Where do the students want their 3 meals a day? A hawker centre, food court, or restaurant?
if deducted from Edusave then ok lar
zzzz $50
for buffet???

Not all kids may have enough money in their Edusave.
I remember I didn't get a lot of Edusave in my time. By the time I was asked whether I wanted to burn up my Edusave for my NUS fees, I had just $9 left in there. And I didn't go overseas or anything - it was used on things like local excursions and enrichment classes.
Anyway, whether it is Edusave-deductible or not is besides the point. Surely there are better things for a school to do than to spend a total of $84,000 (estimated - see my earlier post) from students' Edusave accounts for something that will not benefit them.
In the first place, why even spend so much money on anniversary celebrations?
do most of the students even care how old the school is?
anyone report police already?? no money do what celebration??

And it's only 45 years old! How much will they ask for in 5 years' time?
