SINGAPORE : Singapore and Japan will have closer ties in the area
of sports after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding
(MOU) on Thursday.
As a result, there will also be an exchange of athletes, coaches and officials.
The MOU was signed by Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean,
who is also the president of the Singapore National Olympic Council,
and Mr Tsunekazu Takeda, who is the president of the Japanese Olympic
Committee.
Both countries hope to move their sports forward with the latest partnership.
Mr Teo said: "Japan is one of the power houses in sport and in Asia
as well, and they have a lot of experience in organising major sporting
events. Their national sports federations have also done very well in
major competitions. They also have a lot of experience in sports
administration, sports marketing."
Mr Takeda added: "Both countries have got strong sports - here (in)
Singapore (it) is table tennis, very strong, and sailing. And we have
already started the junior exchange programme for sailing."
