Tremors in Singapore as quake hits Indonesia

Seismograph readings

SINGAPORE: Residents living in the eastern part of Singapore in Marine Parade said they felt tremors after a major 7.5—magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia.

A caller to the MediaCorp hotline said he felt a dizzy sensation in his 22nd—storey flat at around 10.45pm.

Mr Kuladeva said he noticed his chandelier swaying from left to right.

Another caller, 22—year—old Mr Yeo, who also lives in Marine Parade, said the tremor was milder than previous ones he has felt but it lasted longer — up to a minute or so.

Both callers said it was not the first time they felt the tremors after earthquakes struck Indonesia.

Seismologists said the latest quake hit 240 kilometres south of Padang on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami watch notice.
