HOW would Singaporeans react to a possible New York Times Square car bomb scare in their midst? The Police conducted an exercise to find this out two weeks ago.
They parked cars at nine locations around the city, rigged them to show the tell-tale signs of a car bomb and watched to see how the public would react.
The results: 52 public-spirited Singaporeans alerted the police while most of the 7,000 people who walked near the smoking vehicles simply strolled by.
The Police said it will use the lessons from the exercise to improve and expand its public engagements strategies.
The details of the exercise and the results were revealed by Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng on Tuesday morning at the National Security Seminar. It was his first speech as the Coordinating Minister for National Security.
He said the results show that the public is generally complacent about the possibility of terrorist attacks here, but the fact that there were some who alerted the authorities was cause for satisfaction.
(i wonder if real bombs give out smoke to warn ppl first.)
Seriously, pple are more concern on their dailyhood, their work, their family, pple are trying to work hard to save a little bit for family expenses and ever increasing cost of living. They have no time for this smoke or fire in the car.

tt day i was in this bldg and the fire alarm went off
everyone still go on abt their own things, shoppers shop, eaters eat, sales ppl sell, walkers walk.
some ppl peered here and there to kpo but none tot of getting outta the bldg nor was there even a stir
everyone waiting for everyone else to do something b4 they do anything
i was tempted just to run and shout hysterically to see if anyone would follow suit.
but i dun wanna spend the rest of the day in the matachu.
smoking vehicle can simulate certain styles of attacks, for example, chemical or biological attacks.
As in the case at times square, the car bomb failed to went off, thus creating smoke.
Singaporeans are generally quite alert. Its in our genes to be kaypo. trust me.![]()
In the office where there is a alarm sounded, do staff dare to just walk out of the office? Managers will shout at them, you walk out and go home, dont need to come to work anymore.
It is not that pple are not concern about terrorists or the safety of the environment, but pple need to work hard for a living, just earning a miserable salary and yet increasing bills, foods, expenses, really make pple attitude changed.
They will probably think of: Better mind my own suffering business. I dont have time to care for this.
This test is an epic fail. On first look, people might think that the car's engine is giving problems and the smoke escaping through other outlets other than the bonnet.
A better test would be to place a parcel in public places.
i m. i would surely report. but my father tell me dun k-po

i care . 1 in 7000 singaporeans. rare
If there is smoke in the car and if I find no owner around the car, I will report to the police.
Need to look around the area for any possible link to the car.
If i see a smoking car, i will just think of engine trouble. I wont link it to a possible terrorist plot to kill hundreds ![]()
If I see a smoking vehicle, I'll run.
