TAIPEI - TAIWAN is considering imposing chemical castration in a bid to stem sex crimes by repeat offenders, senior minister said on Wednesday.
'We call it 'chemical treatment' ... the government will carefully handle the issue if a public consensus is reached,' Interior Minister Jiang Yi-huah told parliament.
Personal safety issues will be on the agenda of the island's first government-sponsored women's congress scheduled for March 2011 aimed at promoting women's rights and gender equality, he said.
Calls for chemical castration mounted after a case of a sex offender who allegedly molesting two girls just 17 days after being released on parole while wearing electronic monitoring anklet, local media said.
Another offender, convicted of sexually assaulting three girls, reportedly admitted before his release last month after serving an 11-year jail term that he feared he would commit the crime again.
Taiwan could become one of the few governments in Asia to legalise chemical castration and such a move would require parliament's approval, officials said.

Without testerone, guys would slowly turn into guniangs. Can you imagine a city where every guy you see is a David Gan?
actually, that's a good idea .......
why should these fellows be allowed to breed anyways.
Yeah good idea, another reason to abolish that POS campaign called the yellow ribbon thingie.
And what if they continue grinding their limp groins on victims?
But I support for all harsher punishment for sexual offenders as their current punishment does not seem proportionate to the lifelong suffering of the victims.
already in use in south korea.. now taiwan... singapore next? hehe...
I dont think it will be legalised in spore.
There will be pple who oppose to it.
Give them a max cane and up the sentence will do.
For rape, better to have death sentence.
Sounds like a good idea, this is a way to bring justice to the sexual perverts who assaults the vulnerable people in society. It also ensures that the sexual perverts can live in harmony with society after they have been released from prison.
Unfortunately like any other law, this kind of punishment can be misused. What if it is used upon opposition members of the government? What if an innocent politician is set up or framed into a sex scandal and forced to endure chemical castration? Like any other draconian law, this form of punishment can be easily misused and misled to help the ruling government agenda.
JUst ot highlight everyone staying in yishun that there is a pervert walking aroung yishun safra park every morning . This guy is chinese male about 50plus , usually white t shirt with bermudas , always has a small branch on the left hand and a mobile phone on the right hand
He around in the morning from 8am till 930am and he will takes photos of the school children doing their morning exercise around the park
These school children will be in their pt attire , shorts and sweaty t shirts , this pervert will pretend to be smsing , but actually is taking pictures of the boys and girls running and jogging towards his direction
He will wait till the girls and boys are near then he will move his camera phone in their direction and happily snapping along
Hope someone will apprehend this culprit soon and put a stop to his unsocial activities
They've been mulling for years alrdy
but they've not been able to get it passed because of kind of genral human rights issue
They won't do it... I mean, this is against human rights
castration is a good way
but it does not solve the problem at its root
the root is the mentality of the criminal is twisted
