These days having natural resources does not really endow the country with competitive advantage.
Having a skilled workforce matters more, all these raw resources have to be processed by a skilled workforce before they can be transformed into something of value.
Why do you think Singapore with no natural resources is able to net export products worth SG$35 billions for the year 2009?
Malaysia with her natural resources (a population 5.5 times larger than Singapore) on the other hand had a net export of SG$49 billions.
A skilled labour force is also a valuable "natural resource", sometimes more valuable than commodities.

Main natural resource of Botswana is diamond (the world's biggest diamond producer), 63% of her total exports are diamonds, her population in 2009 was approximately 1.78 million, yet Botswana had a trade deficit of BWP 2.5 billion (approximately SG$0.5 billions deficit, which represents 7.6% of her total exports).

Think again, Singapore no natural physical resources exports SG$35 billions, while Botswana the world's largest diamond producer has a deficit of 7.6% of her total exports. So what kind of advantage does having natural resource provide?
The value of a cut, polished and graded diamond is worth many times a raw diamond.
I think some folks should refrain from having the 18th & 19th century mentality in thinking that having natural resources is a key determinant in the success of a country.
Most of us Singaporeans don't think too much, they just let PAP do the thinking for them, so when PAP tells them it's a big deal for them to bring a country with no natural resources to what it is now, they believe it without doing much thinking.
Sighs.....a part of Singapore's rote learning education system.

He took something which was good under the British rule, screw it up, then managed to pick it up again, then claims the credit for himself.
Singapore was already a major port city under the British, being port cities like Hong Kong (no natural resources too), it was destined to thrive as a city of trade.
He wrest control of Singapore from the Brits, charted a wrong course for Singapore by merging with Malaysia. Put the lives of ordinary Singaporeans in economic peril, then managed to return Singapore to status quo ante, then claims that he was the architect of Singapore's success. When in fact if Singapore had remained a British colony, her economic achievements might have surpassed that of Hong Kong's.

TS forgot about 1 basic aspect of why PAP success in the earlier years......they provided affordable HDB housing....when there was "None"
Now the argument is that greater population and limited land scared. Well PAP need to ask themselved how serious are they going to be serving the Voters. It isn't just about the Rich and the Wealthy but the marginal social group....The great thing about Free election is that ALL VOICES matters.

Even the PRCs in China have a better quality of life than their parents in the 1970s, surely you don't expect to be living 2010 in the 1970s.
