NKorea deploys missiles
SEOUL - NORTH Korea has deployed SA-2 surface-to-air missiles near its disputed Yellow Sea border with South Korea, a report said on Sunday as a major US-led naval exercise began further to the south.
The missiles appear to be targeting the South's jet fighters flying near the Northern Limit Line which marks the border, Yonhap news agency quoted a government source as saying.
The defence ministry declined to comment on the report.
South Korea and the United States Sunday launched a naval drill far south of the border, where four people were killed and 18 wounded in Tuesday's surprise artillery bombardment by the North of Yeonpyeong island.
The ageing Soviet-designed SA-2 missile has a range of 8-30km).
Other missiles on the North's west coast, such as the Samlet and Silkworm with ranges of up to 95km, have also been put onto launch pads, the source was quoted as saying. -- AFP

SKorea 'should have hit harder'
SEOUL - MORE than 80 per cent of South Koreans believe their military should have hit back harder after North Korea last week launched a deadly artillery strike, a poll showed on Monday.
In case of another North Korean provocation, 40.6 per cent favour military retaliation calibrated to avoid all-out war, while 33 per cent are willing to risk war to deliver a strong military response, the survey found.
More than 90 per cent are unhappy with China's muted reaction after it failed to condemn its long-time ally Pyongyang over the attack, according to the poll by the Asan Institute for Policy Studies.
Almost 76 per cent support a major US-South Korean naval drill in the Yellow Sea that is meant as a show of force to North Korea but has led the North to warn that the region is 'on the brink of war'.
The institute carried out the nationwide phone survey of 1,000 people on Saturday, four days after the hardline regime killed four people and wounded 18 in its artillery attack on the frontline island of Yeonpyeong.
South Korea returned fire but shied away from air strikes, fearing a dangerous escalation.

N.Korea slams new chief
SEOUL (South Korea) - NORTH KOREA has lambasted South Korea's new defence chief for threatening to launch air strikes against the North and accused the South of causing 'uncontrollable, extreme' tension on the peninsula.
The South's Defence Minister Kim Kwan Jin told a confirmation hearing on Friday that jets would bomb the North if it stages another attack like the shelling on a front-line island that killed four South Koreans.
The North's official Korean Central News Agency issued a statement on Sunday accusing the South of staging a series of 'frantic provocations' including the defence minister's remarks.
It says those actions 'are rapidly driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to an uncontrollable extreme phase.'

Was just talking to my friend about this. Every once in awhile, N. Korea pushes ... and then US and China and S. Korea give them concessions to quieten down. Especially now with the son taking over. He must flex his muscles a bit to show his countrymen and the world that he's no pushover.
BUT ... sooner or later, the other countries are gonna say enough is enough and NOT give them any more concessions.
Then what will N. Korea do? If they back down, they lose face. Continue to escalate? I remember reading somewhere that said that N. Korea would be the biggest losers if it came to an actual conflict. So how? Save face and attack? Lose face and back down?
Sigh ... looks like they're just digging themselves into a hole ... deeper and deeper ...
