SINGAPORE: The starting pay for fresh polytechnic graduates rose
5.3 per cent last year, to an average gross monthly salary of S$1,871.
Post-National
Service (NS) diploma holders earned an average gross monthly salary of
S$2,183, an increase of about 2.5 per cent from 2009.
During the economic downturn in 2009, post-NS diploma holders' gross average monthly salary fell some four per cent.
According
to the latest graduate employment survey, fresh graduates with diplomas
in Maritime, Engineering (Mechanical & Manufacturing) and Health
Sciences and who are in full-time permanent employment commanded higher
gross salaries.
Fresh maritime diploma holders earned an average
gross salary of S$1,996 compared to S$1,821 for accountancy or business
graduates.
The post-NS poly graduates from the Accountancy,
Business, Finance & Law, Maritime and Chemical & Life Sciences
course categories commanded higher gross salaries, some as much as
S$2,362 a month
The figures were reported in the latest graduate employment survey issued on Tuesday by the five polytechnics.
The survey said the increases were in line with the improved economic outlook for Singapore.
As at October 1, 2010, the overall employment rate reached 91.5 per cent, increasing by three percentage points from 2009.
Almost 70 per cent were in full-time permanent employment, growing from 63 per cent in 2009
Unlike in previous years, a higher proportion of graduates joined the private sector.
Of
the fresh graduates with full-time permanent jobs, 86.4 per cent were
employed in the private sector while 13.6 per cent worked in the public
sector.

I think the stats are rather misleading. They are giving averages instead of the median figures, those of you who know what i'm talking about. It would be a more accurate reflection of which salary range most of the graduates fall into.
For example, business and accountancy grads earn an average of $1821 per month. A quick check on jobsdb or jobstreet shows that a lot of the starting salaries are between $1500 - $1900.
Post NS diploma grads earn an average of $2183 per month. From what I know, higher salaries after NS are only paid to those in the public sector. Only 13.6% of these grads fall into that category, so how is it possible that the post NS pay is dragged up so much from $1821 to $2183 per month?
And the rise in 5.3% for fresh grads and 2.5% for post NS grads, has inflation been taken into account? Prices of food and HDBs have risen considerably over the past year.
Fresh poly grads here care to comment?

misleading??as usual that is their way to mislead the masses.they mut think all sporeans still live in the dark ages using stone tools.
can increase to like $3k /mth for poly diploma holders fresh diploma or not?
even the cashier at a 7-11 outlet in australia earns that amount every month!

as u can see from the picture....they r short of the mortar board....of course as it is diploma level....
the time u spent to get a degree for the same years u get a diploma would be more prospective in the eyes of today's employers
it is a brutal fact...but what a fact that will never change
Gross salary $2100-$2300 only?
For the love of god, even a freaking 'N' level salesman earn more than that amount of money!
Then why are we studying for our Diplomas or Degrees??
The stats here are making me laugh... LoL...
If this is a poly school project, I think the stats or marketing research lecturer would have failed the student.
Some U-grads dun even earn more than 2k.
unless its an average of all poly grads then accurate. only take sample check and release these figures? singapore have to mark down our salaries to stay compatitive. this grading more like civil servant grading i see.
They must have done a survey based on 10 persons.... like they do in university employment surveys... 10 is their minimum.
comon, even 10,000 also not accurate! how many poly grads are there every year? ask? they still owe me the 10sgd NTUC fairprice voucher i did with them an emploment survey last October! 10sgd can buy shampoo and toothpaste and soaps shit!

Yes. I was discussing this article with my peer that day. I told them about the misleading stats.
Btw, the increase of fresh grad pay is correlate to economy growth, so I am not surprise about it at all.
The mediam would be a better indication.
