While it is cool for Singapore to be featured on the pages of Sports Illustrated 2011, STOMPer Vassili says that after looking at the photos, he can't help but feel that we
are still looked upon by the West as a liang-teh-drinking,
siew-mai-eating, trishaw-riding and folk-mask-wearing nation.
Said the STOMPer:
"Why are all the models photographed riding trishaws, eating siew mai and drinking liang teh?
"And when you're in Singapore, you just have to take photos on the sandy beaches don't you?
"It's
all right to feature these somewhat antiquated images of Singapore --
they're part of our identity, although I think no one rides trishaws
these days other than tourists.
"But do they define Singapore -- the modern metropolis that it is today?
"Where are our state-of-the-art casinos, our Singapore Flyer, our huge shopping malls and famous skyscrapers?
"It would be nice for Sports Illustrated to portray a more balanced picture of the modern Singapore.
"Although
we are one of the most developed nations in the world, the pictures
seem to still associate us with this whole mysticism that is Asia."
