The online space was abuzz on Monday as netizens shared pictures of what appeared to be a letter sent by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) asking students not to masturbate in the dorm showers.
The letter has turned out to be a hoax. It looked to be a copy of a notice purportedly by a foreign university and also believed to be fake.
The letter, which appeared to be sent by the Hall 8 General Office of NTU, told students that investigations had revealed that blockages found in showers were caused by semen. If the “problem persists”, the university would trace the culprits by matching DNA.
Netizens who tweeted the image of the letter were mostly amused by its contents, with some deducing it must be a hoax. Twitterer Scarletscandals said, “Many funnies! if you’re from NTU & stay in hall, I’ll give you funny looks hereonforth.”
Local blogger Mr Brown tweeted that he received more than 4,000 twitpic views of the NTU letter in an hour.
A second-year student at NTU, who declined to be named, said he saw the earlier letter, which came from a United States university, a year ago. But while he found it funny then, he was less amused by the recent letter bearing the NTU name.
“In Singapore, an Asian country, I don’t think it’s appropriate,” he said.
When contacted by Yahoo! Singapore, a spokesperson from the Hall of Residents 8 at NTU said, “The letter is obviously a hoax, as can be seen from the wrong phone numbers. The wording of the message is exactly the same as that of an older hoax involving a foreign university.”
The university has no plans to investigate the hoax at this point in time, he added.
