MALAYS' declining share of the resident population could, in future, affect their ability to bridge the gap between them and the other communities, leaders of the Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) said at a forum on Saturday.
Several panellists, however, felt the picture was not all bleak, and pointed to growing social mobility in the community, especially over the past decade.
Consultant demographer G. Shantakumar said: 'It makes more sense to compare where you were on Saturday against where you will be tomorrow, and not so much against other groups.'
The retired associate professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) foresees Malay fertility declining a little further, but on the plus side, the community now has a larger proportion of youth who can lift its economic stature.
Associate Professor Tan Ern Ser, an NUS sociologist, noted that a recent survey by the Institute of Policy Studies shows that Malays were least likely to feel politically alienated.
Various indicators suggest considerable social mobility. The community made significant improvements in income, education and in the size of their homes.

Malays will never bridge the gap. It's a vicious cycle.
Malays are now being replaced by Filipinos, just as the rest of us are being replaced by other foreigners.
Those who are more socially mobile have also left the country, leaving the less well-off behind.
They are easily contented.
No motivation.
Little money is enough.
Sorry to say this but in general, the malay race is the same...be it m'sia or indonesia.
MALAYS ARE MARRYING YOUNGER AND HAVING MORE KIDS THAN CHINESE...................
the only reason why their share of the population is declining is becoz PAP let so many PRCs in...................
Just vote PAP out to restore demographic balance.
No to PAP burying us with aliens.
Vote PAP out.
Are there not Chinese who can not bridge the gap?
Are there not Indians who can not bridge the gap?
There are Malays who have made it successfully, by their own effort. Just like some Chinese and Indians.
Not every Chinese, Malay, or Indian can bridge the gap between the have and the have nots.
Local malays different from our neighouring countries.
They need to work, need salary to feed their kids and house.
local Malays very the sway compared to those in M'sia.................
So what type of sway are you refering to ? The Malays are the Origins of Singapura. Not the Chinese and the Indians. Given the equal opportunities they will be better than the other races. This report is based on wether the Malays will support the PAP. Thats all.

what about peranakans like Lee Kuan Yew and Lee Hsien Loong?
SIX MPs and two ministers on Monday gave upbeat views on the state of racial cohesion in Singapore and, in particular, the Malay-Muslim community's efforts to integrate.
Speaking during the parliamentary debate on the budget of the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mr Seah Kian Peng (Marine Parade GRC) said he shared Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's view that the Malay-Muslim community has made great efforts to integrate with others to join the mainstream.
PM Lee spoke in the wake of views expressed by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew in a new book, that Malay-Muslims here did not integrate, causing some unease.
Said Mr Seah: 'My Malay friends eat with me, shake hands with me and we speak in the same mix of Malay, Hokkien and Singlish that we do with all races.
'We have had four decades of national service, economic ups and downs, our children have been schooled in the same language and, by and large, they share the same world view.'
He noted that Malay grassroots groups in his GRC had non-Malay members, and two key grassroots leaders in his Braddell Heights ward are Malays even though Malays form less than 6 per cent of residents there.
