SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he is "convinced" Singaporeans have become more cohesive and achieved a common identity over the past decade.
Mr Lee made this point while delivering a report card on the Community Engagement Programme (CEP), which was launched five years ago.
The initiative aims to enhance Singapore's social cohesion, especially in times of crisis.
Mr Lee said attitudes among Singaporeans have shifted.
Different groups, he said, link up to hold joint activities.
For example, mosque groups join other communities in a brisk walking exercise.
Mr Lee said it's important to sustain the CEP and welcomed new ideas, as well as proposals.
He
added the present state of affairs in Singapore is "still a work in
progress", especially with the overall global terror threat to the
country "not significantly less" from five or 10 years ago.
Mr Lee said the nature of the terrorist problem has morphed and terrorists are innovating their methods.
So governments too have to upgrade.
He cited self-radicalisation as an example of a new challenge Singapore has to deal with.

Then why so many people emigrate?
This coming from someone who cannot even tell the difference between Mee Siam and Laksa.
Nothing but bullshit.
All I know is that if PAP continues to rule Singapore, Singapore will be destroyed, that is why I want to destroy PAP.
You got to face the hard truths.
You and your father are peranakans.
Majority of Singaporeans are not peranakans.
That is why as long as nation building is in yours or your father's hands, it can never succeed.
These are the hard truths.
You imposed all the alien, westernised systems onto the local people and try to suppress their local culture.
This type of system won't hold.
PAP is worthless in nation building.
This is the truth.
I can't help but notice that most people moaning about PAP are either lowly-paid or lost their jobs due to foreigners. The only thing I can grumble about is that my household receives the minimal income tax rebate and minimum amount of incentives. I should be complaining, but I'm not going to because I think PAP is doing a good job and giving me a good life. Call me a rich ass or anything you like, but at least PAP allows everyone to have a roof over their heads, unlike people in Hong Kong. I've just been there for over 2 months and I can see how many elderly are collecting cardboard and selling them for a living. I've also seen the homeless sleep on the streets at night. How often do we see them in Singapore. Never mind that they are paying off their housing loans for life, at least we've got a roof over our heads. We should appreciate what PAP is doing for us. Yes, some opposition is going to help improve some lacking policies, but you have to agree that they gave all of us something worth protecting.
Cant help but to voice out this.
Why sporean have common identity?
Simple, as you can see now, sporean are working to make sure their family have 3 meals to eat per day. Make sure children has pocket money to go to school. Make sure pub, telephone bills pay up on time. Make sure saving account got money to deduct via giro for certain bills such as housing loans.
As such, sporean saving is fully stretched and save not much per month. They will not have the luxury to dine out, shopping, holidays.
Then what? They started to join brisk walk excerises, this and that organised by the pap which is foc. Everybody come together in another words.
Is that call common identity?
